Roots Manuva to (obok Wiley'a, Ty, Rodney P, Mike’a Ladd'a oraz Dizzee Rascal'a) jedna z kluczowych postaci dla brytyjskiej sceny hip hop. Rodney zaczynał w latach 90. Wkrótce jego niezwykły zmysł producencki (inkorporowanie elementów zaczerpniętych z dubu, reggae i elektroniki do hip hopu) odkryła wytwórnia Big Dada. W 1999 roku pojawił się debiutancki album Smith'a. Krążek "Brand New Second Hand" okazał się wielkim sukcesem. Ucementował jego niezwykłe umiejętności jako rapera o szamańskim, mistycznym głosie mówiącym o wielu poważnych, społecznych problemach. I to w sumie pisanie oraz nawijanie stanie się tak naprawdę jego domeną. Kolejne albumy tego syna pastora zielonoświątkowców okazały się równie oryginalne i niezwykłe. Za wydany w 2001 roku longplay Run Come Save Me został wkrótce nominowany w kategorii "Najlepszy Album" w corocznym rozdaniu muzycznych nagród Mercury Prize. Jak do tej pory Roots Manuva ma na swoim koncie trzy studyjne albumy. Ostatnich z nich "Alternately Deep" pojawił się w marcu 2006 roku. Jeśli chcesz go posłuchać w innych aranżacjach to RM ma na koncie szeroką paletę nagrań powstałych przy współpracy z takimi artystami jak The Cinematic Orchestra, Beth Orton, Leftfield, Amon Tobin, Chali 2na, DJ Shadow, UNKLE, Nightmares on Wax, Gorillaz, Coldcut.
