Manu Chao, urodzony 21 czerwca 1961 roku, naprawdę nazywa się Jose-Manuel Thomas Arthur Chao, kompozytor i wykonawca muzyki folk sięgającej korzeniami do muzyki latynoskiej. Rodzice Manu Chao, z pochodzenia Hiszpanie z Galicji, uciekając przed reżimem Franco wyemigrowali do Paryża. Przyszły artysta wychowywał się na przedmieściach Paryża. Jak sam stwierdził w wieku młodzieńczym miał dwie życiowe drogi do wyboru, albo zostać dilerem, albo piłkarzem. Traf chciał ze zamiast kopnąć piłkę na boisku wziął do ręki gitarę. Wczesne lata 80te to granie na podwórkach i w knajpach. Zafascynowany muzyką Chucka Berry'ego gra rock'n'roll, tyle ze wplata już hiszpańskie i francuskie teksty piosenek. Połowa lat 80tych to życie w bohemie Paryża, granie w wielu różnych składach. Pierwsze doświadczenia z branżą muzyczną zdobywał wraz z bratem i kuzynem - pierwsza kapela Hot Pants i płyta "Loco Mosquito" oraz Los Carayos(kolektyw undergroudowych zespołów). Olbrzymi sukces osiągnął z grupą Mano Negra grającą nieprzerwanie od 1987 do 1994. W 1998 rozpoczął karierę solową wydając album Clandestino. Płyta z piosenkami śpiewanymi po francusku, hiszpańsku, arabsku, portugalsku i angielsku. Choć jest jednym z najlepiej sprzedających się artystów na świecie, nie jest dobrze znany w anglosaskim kręgu kulturowym. Jak sam o sobie mówi nie ma jednego miejsca, w którym mieszka. Pomimo że ostatnio najwięcej czasu spędza w Brazylii, to jego ulubionym miejscem jest Barcelona. Manu Chao współpracuje z wieloma artystami, nagrywa z nimi wspólnie piosenki, produkuje płyty (m.in. płytę Amadou & Mariam Dimanche à Bamako w 2004).
