Swoje pierwsze kroki stawiał w formacji Killing Riddim Section. Pojechał na Jamajkę. Przez prawie dwa miesiące poznawał kulturę, język i przede wszystkim muzykę. Razem z kolektywem Silly Walks Movement pojechał w trasę koncertową. Wspólny singiel z zespołami Freundeskreis i Mellowbag oraz zainteresowanie wytwórni płytowych. W 1999 roku wydał swój pierwszy album „Trodin On”. Krytycy rozpływali się nad talentem Gentlemana, chwaląc jego umiejętność posługiwania się patois (językiem użytkowym Jamajczyków) i wyczucie karaibskich brzmień. Tilman rozstał się z Killing Riddim Section i rozpoczął współpracę z Far East Band. W 2002 roku pojawił się album „Journey To Jah”, który był przełomem w twórczości artysty. Gentleman stał się gwiazdą. W 2004 roku pojawiła się płyta „Confidence”, która potwierdziła ogromny potencjał Tilmana. Płyta "Another Intensity" wydana w 2007 roku potwierdziła kunszt muzyczny wykonawcy doskonale uwidaczniający się w poprzednich krążkach.
